The Mayor of Novi Sad, Žarko Mićin, attended the opening of the U23 World Championship for Junior Seniors, which will be held from 20 to 27 October, with the participation of 1,100 competitors from 66 countries from all over the world.

“As a city that will take the title of European City of Sport in 2026, Novi Sad is proud to welcome this competition. Wrestling in Novi Sad has a tradition of more than a century. Since the founding of the Judas Maccabi Sports Society in 1920, through generations of champions who have won European, world, Balkan and Olympic medals, wrestling has become and remains a symbol of perseverance, discipline and respect. Our city is proud of the fact that it has hosted many major wrestling competitions, from the European Senior Championship in 2017, through 2019 when we hosted the European Championship for the age of 23 and last year when the European Championship for cadets and juniors was held in Novi Sad,” said Micin, adding that there are more than 1,097 sports clubs and associations in Novi Sad and over 134,000 citizens who are actively involved in sports and more 200 sports events per year.

The attendees were also addressed by the Minister of Sports of the Republic of Serbia, Zoran Gajić. President of the Wrestling Federation of Serbia Damir Šabić and President of the World Wrestling Federation Nenad Lalovic. Damir Šabić thanked the Mayor of Novi Sad, Žarko Mićin, for providing full support as the President of the Organising Committee of the Championship in order to ensure that the world-class event went in the best possible order.
